ARTICLE 27 Bicyclists and Users of Play Vehicles; Rights and Duties

When You Are a Bicyclist

Bicyclists should remember, when you are riding a bicycle, you have the same duties and privileges of a motor vehicle when on a public roadway. Unlike pedestrians, who should walk facing traffic, bicyclists should ride with the flow of traffic and obey all traffic laws.

If you ride a bicycle on a roadway, especially at dawn or at dusk, consider wearing retro-reflective clothing to help increase your chances of being seen by motorists.

When riding a bicycle, you must:

South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, definitions, electric-assist bicycles, bicycles with helper motors

SECTION 56-1-10.Definitions.

(29) "Electric-assist bicycles" and "bicycles with helper motors" means low-speed electrically assisted bicycles with two or three wheels, each having fully operable pedals and an electric motor of no more than 750 watts, or one horsepower, and a top motor-powered speed of less than twenty miles an hour when operated by a rider weighing one hundred seventy pounds on a paved level surface, that meet the requirements of the Federal Consumer Product Code provided in 16 C.F.R., Part 1512, and that operate in a manner such that the electric motor disengages or ceases to function when their brakes are applied or the rider stops pedaling. Manufacturers and distributors of electric-assist bicycles shall apply a label that is affixed permanently, in a prominent location, to each electric-assist bicycle, indicating its wattage and maximum electrically assisted speed. The owner or user of an electric-assist bicycle shall not remove or tamper with the label. If a user tampers with or modifies an electric-assist bicycle, changing the speed capability, he must replace the label indicating the vehicle's wattage or horsepower. Electric-assist bicycles and bicycles with helper motors are not mopeds.

SECTION 56-5-3520.Applicability of provisions to bicycles with helper motors.

Bicyclists operating bicycles with helper motors, as defined in Section 56-1-10, are subject to all statutory provisions applicable to bicyclists, as provided in Section 56-5-3420.

MTB at The Hulk

Horry County Bike & Run Park

The Bike & Run Park also known as 'The Hulk,' has quickly become a park of regional significance, attracting both local users, MTB enthusiasts and vacationers alike.  Originally developed through the vision and labor of volunteers on a county-owned dredge spoil basin that provides drastic changes in elevation that cannot be found in other parts of the county. This facility is located along the Intracoastal Waterway near River Oaks Drive in Carolina Forest. Seven miles of single track mountain biking and hiking trails on 70 acres of open space. Now featuring 'The Lil Hulk' a kids skills park for the up-and-coming cyclist. With wooden structures that ebb and flow into low rocks and flowing features, The Lil Hulk was built by volunteers of MBA2 (Myrtle Beach Area Mountain Bike Association). In addition to providing a venue for a variety of races, its parking area serves as the first official East Coast Greenway trailhead in the State of South Carolina.

Meet the Owners

Originally from Maryland, but for the past 13 years have called Myrtle Beach home. The City of Myrtle Beach has provided Hannah & CJ the luxury of biking as a primary mode of transportation. On their various rides throughout the city, they noticed the lack of bike rental options. They realized that they needed to find a way to share their love of biking with their community. Living and riding by the beach has always been a huge part of their lives. Hannah growing up biking with family on vacations in Rehoboth, Delaware and CJ loving bikes from an early age. He then and now rides BMX bikes and it will always be a passion for him. In 2012 he worked at Bethany Beach Bike Shop learning the skills and practices it takes to run a bike shop.

Hannah & CJ want everyone who vacations in Myrtle to have those everlasting memories; riding to the beach on a hot summer night, or getting ice cream after dinner. In 2015, CJ moved to Myrtle Beach to be closer to Hannah and pursue his dreams. In 2021, they created their dream--Boardwalk Bikes! They are so happy to be starting this new journey, and are beyond excited to share their love of bikes with all Myrtle Beach visitors and locals.
